December 2008
A meeting of Winteringham W.I. was held on Thursday 18th December 2008 in the Village Hall. The president, Mrs Chris Wood welcomed 18 members and one guest. The apologies received were recorded.
The minutes of the November Meeting were read through and signed and the matters arising dealt with. The Secretary then read through the correspondence received.
Members were reminded that the Annual Meal will be held on Thursday 8th January 2009 at the Bay Horse Inn.
In the News Slot members were told that there would be Christmas Carols Services at the church and chapel on 21st December. The Village Hall Committee are thinking of holding an Open Gardens in Winteringham in August 2009. More details in the New Year.
The Speaker was Mr Alan Palmer who told the members of his experiences whilst giving advice to the producers of The Royal.
Alan explained that he was only involved with the first series made. St Lukes Hospital in Leeds had a separate self-contained maternity unit which had been closed and the BBC used this for shooting some of the scenes. It had been converted inside to look like a 1960’s hospital and Alan said that he was very impressed in the fact that the producers were very thorough in getting everything to look authentic.
He had given advice on the medical aspects of the operations, etc. He had to teach the actors how to make incisions and how much blood would have been created. Everything had to be as near as possibly correct. He had spoken with one of the stars, Wendy Craig and she was very concerned that she portrayed the role of matron correctly so he had put her in touch with an old friend of his.
Christine Hammond gave the vote of thanks and she told Mr Palmer that it had been a fascinating insight into the way that the programme had been made.
The committee were the hostesses serving the members with that welcome cup of tea/coffee and shortbread biscuits and mince pies. The draw had taken place for the mystery parcels given by members of the committee.
Mr Palmer judged the competition for “A Special Christmas Card”. Won by: Annie Armstrong, 2nd Mary Christoffersen, 3rd Josie Ogg.
Next meeting in the hall is on 22nd January 2009 when the speaker will be Dianne Grimshaw speaking about Joyce Grenville and the competition is for the Best Christmas Cracker Joke.
