February 2008
There was a change of speaker for the February meeting of Winteringham W.I. but the new speaker was very interesting and very much enjoyed by the members. This speaker was Lisa Staves, the Finds Liaison Officer from North Lincolnshire Museum speaking about ‘Finds in North Lincolnshire.’
Lisa explained about the Portable Antiquity Scheme. This is a voluntary scheme to record any items of historical interest found by members of the public. Unreported finds are a loss to our heritage. She said that metal detectorists go on to agricultural land and find items that might otherwise go undetected and be lost for ever.
Everyone is encouraged to go along to the museum so that Lisa can record their finds on a data base. It is very important to be able to pinpoint exactly where the article was found.
Lisa showed slides of items found locally. These ranged from flint arrow heads from 3,500 B.C., Roman coins and jewellery through to medieval coins, ampulet and harness pendant.
Lisa’s advice to anyone finding an object is not to clean it and to visit her to find out how to store it correctly.
Jackie Bateman gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the members.
The Hostesses then served a very welcome cup of tea or coffee and the draw for the Mystery Parcels took place. The winners were Sandra Wilkinson, Jean McAvoy, Sue Bolton and Margaret Burton
Lisa Staves judged the competition for an interesting Tea Towel: 1st Margaret Ward, 2nd Val Hayton 3rd Josie Ogg.
At the March meeting the demonstrator will be Josephine Wallace who will show the members beautiful ways to arrange Spring Flowers. The competition is for a Floral Mug.
