February 2010

Winteringham W.I. held their meeting Thursday 18th February 2010 in the Village Hall.  Chris Wood welcomed 26 members and 6 guests and asked everyone to stand to sing ‘Jerusalem’.

The minutes of the meeting on 21st January were read through and signed as being a true record.  The matters arising from these minutes were dealt with.

The president reminded the meeting that nominations for the new committee were needed and also spoke about two amendments to the programme -  Members Night will be held on 15th July and the date for the August Meeting should be 19th not 20th

Items of interest from the Federation Newsletter were noted.
Sheets passed around for members to sign if they wish to attend events at Federation House and the Annual Meeting at ‘The House’ on Sat. 24th April.

In the News Slot members were told that Winterton Lions are holding a Pie & Peas Supper in Burton Village Hall on Saturday 6th March,  at Winteringham Methodist Chapel there is a Family Service this Sunday (21st Feb) and that an evening of  Flowers, Fun & Frivolity will be held at the Bay Horse Inn on Thursday  4th March – proceeds to go to Lindsey Hospice.

Speaker
Chris Wood then handed over to our speaker for the evening – Mrs Sandra Clayton who had agreed to return to show slides and tell the ladies about the history of Winteringham.

Sandra explained that last time she had attended the W.I. she had not managed to get all round the village but she would do a quick resume of the area already covered and then move on down West End to the Church

Sandra amused the members with her stories about Cock Fighting and riotous behaviour at Gate End and also tales of Winteringham Show which was traditional held in July.  The first train into the station had arrived in July 1907 probably to correspond with the day of the show.

As she showed slides all around the village Sandra recounted the history of buildings and the streets, matching old photographs with new.

She explained about the chapels in the village.  The first Methodist chapel had been in Low Burgage opening in 1824 then the larger chapel was opened on West End in 1891.  However the newest Methodist chapel is once again in Low Burgage and is very close to Little Trinity where William Harrison the leader of the Quaker group in the village had lived.  Behind Little Trinity there was a Quaker burial ground.

Sandra showed pictures of Earlsgate Farm, Manor Farm, Andrew’s grocery shop, ‘Dickie Newborn’s cottage’, The Temperance Hall, Lindsay Cottages, the oldest cottage in the village which stands next to her mother’s house, Spring House, School House, The National School (opened in 1845), the new rectory and two older rectories before moving on to the church.

The members were interested to learn the some old Roman stones are incorporated into the walls of the church and that there are also a 13th century figure and two medieval grave stones visible in the walls.

She spoke of the beautiful stained glass windows, the different types of pillars and arches and the effigy of Edward Marmion who is dressed in chain mail and was a former Lord of the Manor.

Once again time ran out but the ladies were urged to look at the books, photographs and press cuttings that Sandra had brought along.

Val Lancaster gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the ladies and she said that we should all have a really good look around our village...

The hostesses:   Marianne Ogg, Yvonne Ogg and Carol Smith served everyone with a welcome cup of tea or coffee.

The draw took place the Mystery Parcels given by the hostesses.
The competition for A Village Photograph or picture was judged by Sandra 1st Jean McAvoy,   2nd  Chris Wood      3rd Heather Bateman

Next meeting is the Annual Meeting on 18th March.  The speaker that night will give a talk on The Lighthouse - a talk about the homeless.
