Marjorie welcomed our speakers, Julia and Serena who invited us to Take a Scrap of Fabric. Their tables were laden with vintage embroidery and small handmade articles. In a light hearted talk laced with interesting reminiscences, Julia began by saying that their aim was to give us lots of ideas for making good use of the many small scraps of fabric which are accumulated by all needlewomen. Serena, who particularly enjoys working with felt, showed us numerous ingenious designs ranging from small individual animals-cats, birds, butterflies and chickens to larger scale garlands, cards and gift tags to suit all occasions. Julia demonstrated Suffolk puffs fashioned into a brooch and tiny specimens on cards and gift tags. Buttons covered with fabric salvaged from damaged embroidered table and tray cloths were particularly admired. Advice was given about sharpening scissors and pinking shears by cutting fine sand paper or tin-foil (Annie said it worked best if the scissors were held upside down). With the popularity of cup-cakes and 'tea-time' things, vintage embroidered fabrics are currently in vogue and everyone was pleased when the ladies agreed to come back next year to 'Go through Grandma's drawers'. Pam Wells gave the vote of thanks, saying how useful the advice given had been, especially that relating to fabric which you hate, which Julia said never improves with keeping! She expressed appreciation for an entertaining and interesting talk which had left members buzzing with ideas.
The Competition for a small item made of fabric was won by Jenny Cressey with a whitework cushion cover, joint second Sue Bolton and Annie Armstrong and third Jean McAvoy.
Mystery Parcel winners were Chris Wood, Sally Smith and Mary Christoffersen
