The July meeting of Winteringham W.I. is traditionally the meeting when the committee enjoys a night organised by the members and once again the members had organised a wonderful evening for all to enjoy.
Mrs Josie Ogg welcomed 27 members and one visitor. She invited everyone to join her in the singing of Jerusalem.
The business part of the evening was kept to a minimum. Members were told about the visit for lunch at Uncle Henry’s on Wednesday 1st August at 12.30 pm and the Chinese Buffet on Thursday 16th August Envelopes for collecting unwanted jewellery for the Treasurer Chest Appeal were given out to members who had not already received one.
The speaker for the meeting was Mrs Sue Frankish from Normanby Hall. Sue explained that she had raided the attics to bring along a number of ’Everyday Domestic Items from the Victorian Era’. The ladies were invited to write down what they thought each one of these items had been used for.
Some of the articles like the Darning Mushroom, the Donkey Stone for whitening steps and the hook for making Rag Rugs were readily identified but others were more difficult. Did anyone guess the Bottle Opener which pushed the marble into the pop bottle? Or the candle wick trimmer?
The winning team was the ‘Fruits of the Forest’ (Jackie, Heather, Annie and Jean) and Sue presented them with a bottle of wine. Mrs Jennie Pike thanked Sue on behalf of all the ladies.
A delicious supper of cold meats, quiches and salads followed by a selection of delicious sweets had been prepared by the members. This was served with a glass of wine or orange juice.
The president, Mrs Christine Wood thanked everyone who had arranged and helped to make this, once again, an extremely enjoyable Members Night.
