Winteringham W.I.

A group of twenty one members assembled in bright sunshine in the pleasant courtyard at Uncle Henry's, Grayingham Farm at the beginning of the annual outing. Despite numbers being depleted by illness and holidays, we were looking forward to the evening as we were made welcome by Steve, the owner. Uncle Henry's has been in business for five years, having grown from small beginnings to the thriving concern it is today.

After browsing around a large shop stocking food items produced on the farm- pork, bacon, sausages, ham, vegetables, salad leaves, tomatoes,  herbs strawberries and many other food items locally produced, from flour to preserves, the ladies made purchases and were tempted by the wide range of unusual gift items and cards.

When the shopping had to stop, Steve took us to meet the gardener, Nicky who has created her growing area from the wilderness that it was three years ago. She explained her system of crop rotation and identified the wide range of impressively healthy plants- everything from peas and beans to Jerusalem artichokes. We were amused by the antics of Midge the Jack Russell who relentlessly patrolled the artichokes in the hope of catching the rabbits who invade the land- and very relieved that she was unsuccessful whilst we were there!

We enjoyed a walk around the orchard, where recently a very successful wine tasting evening had been held by lantern-light. Many of the trees were laden with various fruits which will be sold in the shop in due course.

Back indoors we were interested to see the education room where school groups learn about the farm and to conclude our visit we enjoyed a selection of lovely cakes and tea and coffee in the restaurant.

Thanks were extended to Steve and the two helpful young ladies who served us, for a very enjoyable evening.
