Winteringham WI
Minutes for the meeting of Winteringham W.I held on Thursday 19 May 2011 at the Village Hall at 7.30pm.

The President
welcomed 28 members and three guests to the meeting. It was good to have Nancy Corney back with us. A card had been sent to Kathleen Fillingham who is in hospital, but now making good progress.  Christine commented on the good number present and we sang Jerusalem. Some concern was expressed that the speaker had not arrived - a road traffic accident had blocked the road at Appleby. We proceeded slowly with business.

Apologies were recorded from eight members not present.

Minutes of the meeting held on Thursday 21 April 2011 were read and agreed to be a true record. The President signed them.

The Resolutions were discussed at some length with a report from Christine Wood who had attended the meeting with Valerie Lancaster. Votes were unanimously in favour of the call to prevent the closure of Public Libraries. The issues on the second resolution, to prevent the establishment of Mega Farms in the UK, were complicated and no vote was taken. The delegate is to be entrusted with the vote at NFWI Conference.

A warm welcome was extended to Georgie Rawlins who found us despite a detour. She told us about her early days in embroidery, when she joined a course as a complete beginner and went on to do City and Guilds, taught by an ex Royal School of Needlework tutor. Using what the Americans call a 'fanny frame' which leaves both hands free to work, Georgie demonstrated the technique of fashioning a variety of flowers  using rayon or silk ribbon and a tapestry needle on a background of tailor's canvas. Members were impressed by the effect and a number were eager to try for themselves- and so delighted with the result that a day school in the autumn was proposed, which Georgie agreed to lead.
Sincere thanks for sharing her expertise was offered by Sandra Wilkinson  who said we will all look forward to seeing Georgie again soon.
