The speaker booked for the November meeting of Winteringham W.I. was unfortunately not able to attend but the gentleman who stepped in at just a few hours notice proved to be a very able substitute.
He told the ladies about the origins of Cockney rhyming slang from the days when it was almost a code language between the costermongers to present day when it is used throughout the country. When someone says “lets have a butchers”, this is from the cockney rhyming slang ‘butcher hook’ and means “Can I have a look?”
The ladies then took part in a quiz based upon the rhyming slang. There was much hilarity as the members tried to guess what each phrase meant. The winning team was Jackie, Heather and Janet and they were presented with a small prize.
Whilst coffee/tea and mince pies were served the ladies enjoyed listening to C.D.s of old Cockney Musical Hall stars. Christine Hammond gave a vote of thanks on behalf of all the ladies.
The competition for an ornament of a bird was judged by the members placing a coin against their favourite. The winners were Margaret Ward, Margaret Burton and Christine Hammond. These coins will be sent off to A.C.W.W. along with the other money already collected
Members were reminded that the next meeting will be the Annual Dinner on 14th December at Grandmas Pantry in Brigg.
