October 2009

Minutes for the meeting of Winteringham WI held at the Village Hall on Thursday 15 October at 7.30p.m.

Mrs Wood, the President, welcomed twenty three members and one guest and invited them to sing Jerusalem.
Apologies were recorded from seven members unable to be present.

Minutes of the meeting held on Thursday 17 September 2009 were left on the table for members to read at leisure and were signed as a true record by Mrs Wood.

There were no matters arising from the previous meeting.

Mrs Wood asked members to complete the list for hostesses and mystery parcels for 2010 and add names to the list for our Christmas Dinner.

Correspondence
An invitation had been received from Messingham W.I. to join them for their meeting on Monday 7 December 2009 and from Alkborough W.I. to attend their meeting on Wednesday 13 January 2010 when they will meet in Alkborough Church. The letters were circulated and a number of members expressed a wish to attend.

Federation Newsletter was perused and a number of items pointed out to members.
New sheets detailing workshops were circulated for members to sign and a notice about the National Federation AGM read out.

Finances:
Mrs Lancaster reported that there was £602.44 in the current account and £143.63 in the bursary account.
Subscriptions and pooling of fares for 2010 had been discussed at committee and the decisions were communicated to members.

Mrs Wood then welcomed our 82nd birthday entertainers- the Hand Bell Ringers from Holy Trinity Church, Messingham. Eight ladies were lead by their musical director Roger Lord. Pam Cook first told us about the history of the group and we were then treated to a delightful programme which ranged from ‘Knees Up Mother Brown’, through Handel’s ‘Largo’, the Skye Boat Song’ and many others to finish with a special ‘Birthday Suite’ which was the latest addition to their repertoire. Mr Lord told us about the history of bells and hand bell ringing in this country and in America, including the information that a chromatic set of twenty five bells costs £13,000! Few of the ladies were able to sight read, but a new method of notation is being employed and all are gradually learning. Six W.I. members bravely responded to the invitation to ‘have a go’ and joined the ringers to attempt Ode to Joy. All thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt that they had done rather well!
Mrs Christine Hammond offered a sincere vote of thanks to the group and invited them to join us for a drink and apple pie and cream which was served by the committee.

The competition for a small bell was won by Annie Armstrong, with Jackie Bateman and Margaret Kitchen coming second and third.

The mystery parcels, provided by members of the committee, were won by Marianne Ogg, Anne Carnaby, Jackie Bateman, Margaret Kitchen, Roger Lord and one of the lady ringers.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 19 November and will be the long awaited Special Edition Chocolates, when, we are told, very mysteriously, that there will be a special guest at each table.
The competition is for a china sweet dish and hostesses and mystery parcels will be Jackie and Heather Bateman and Margaret Ward.
