Saris 1

Christine then welcomed Angela Tubb, who had been delayed by a badly signed diversion at a road closure. Her talk was entitled the Colours of Bangladesh, immediately seen in the array of gloriously coloured saris and shalwar kameez displayed. Angela described her twenty years as a memsahib in Bangladesh, married to a native engineer, bringing up her family in relative affluence with ayahs, a cook and servants to care for them. She helped to organise cataract operations, travelling to villages to announce the advent of the 'eye doctor' and describing to us, with wry humour, the attempts of the villagers to provide a 'bathroom' worthy of an English memsahib. She told of mothers who brought their small children to work for her and how she took them in to help relieve the poverty for the rest of the family, preserving their pride by giving the children appropriate tasks and engaging a local teacher to give them reading and writing skills. Three lucky members were invited to model some of Angela's many beautiful sari and  commented on the comfort and gracefulness of the garments. In conclusion, Angela answered many questions.
Valerie Lancaster thanked Angela for a most enjoyable evening and wished her a safe and trouble free journey home.
