The President then introduced Mr Jeff Trinder who was speaking about his trip and showing slides of Madagascar. Jeff explained that since he took early retirement from his post as a teacher, he has travelled all over the world taking photographs of the countries and the wild life.
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries of the world and 90% of the natural habitat has already been destroyed because the people are cutting down the rain forests in order to grow food. Unfortunately once the trees have been removed the soil is washed away by the rivers and then the land becomes too poor to grow crops
Jeff gave the ladies an insight into the lives of the people, showing markets, the houses, ox carts and people carrying loads upon their heads. The ladies were delighted with the pictures of the plants, insects and other wild life. The lemurs were especially admired and some of the birds were very colourful and unusual. Jeff had photographs of numerous types of frogs, snakes and geckos and one of a moth which was at least 1 ft long.
Chris Hammond gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the members. Tea and coffee were served by the hostesses Carol Smith and Enid Carter..
