Monthly Speaker
The President welcomed Jackie Cheetham who had joined us for Hats and Chats. Thirty ladies present were wearing 'posh' hats and paraded round the room to allow Jackie to make her choice for the competition, her first choice being a visitor Mrs Kath Brown in a large and dramatic deep lilac creation. The members' competition was won by Mrs Mary Nuttell in a beautiful black feather vintage hat, very much in fashion at present. Third was Mrs Jenny Pike wearing a saucy 'mushroom' in pale lilac which was much admired.

Jackie is the County Chairman of Lincolnshire North Federation and told us that she had been widowed just four months ago. Her husband, Maurice, played a large role in many of her stories and she was much admired for her bravery in talking about him with such humour and warmth. Jackie worked for twenty years as an upholsterer before setting up a wedding business in Louth with a friend. She designed and made wedding dresses and accessories and following the death of her friend continued to sell ready made items. When Maurice became ill last Christmas she sold her business and retired - but still has eighty wedding dresses should anyone need one!

Jackie has always loved hats and began with an 'Old Mother Riley' model from the mid 19th century. There followed hats of every era from the twenties through to the present day, all accompanied by amusing stories, anecdotes and jokes. Each one was described in detail with comments about how it was made and the development of the various fashions described. At the end of the talk, there was an opportunity to examine the hats more closely and Jackie answered many questions

In thanking her Mrs Christine Wood described the talk as 'lively, interesting and funny' and commented that Maurice had obviously been a wonderful W.I. husband. We all enjoyed a very entertaining evening.

Hostesses and Mystery Parcels Karen, Jenny and Sue were joined by committee members to serve hot drinks and home made scones.
