March 2010

Minutes of the Annual Meeting of Winteringham W.I held on Thursday 18 March 2010 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.

Mrs Wood welcomed twenty nine members and apologies were recorded. The president invited the company to sing Jerusalem and this was followed by a few moments of quiet reflection for the Wainwright family.

Mrs Wood then invited our speakers to give their presentation, so that they did not have to sit through our annual meeting business!

The Lighthouse- a talk on the Homeless
Linda, duty manager, Alison, duty manager, Catherine, volunteer life coach and Louise, a former guest at the Lighthouse joined forces to tell us about the work they do at this former retail unit, which was converted into a refuge for the homeless in October 2007. The accommodation consists of four double, eight single and one room adapted for disability with up to 25 people resident at any one time. Guests are resident for a period of up to six months and receive professional and volunteer support and help to resolve their problems so that they can move forward.

Emphasis is placed on enabling the guests to help themselves, by providing information, facilities and encouragement. Computers are available for anyone to use freely with help if needed and Catherine provides life coaching sessions to promote self awareness and self reliance. Ten regular workers manage the Lighthouse, giving 24 hour cover, and include a housekeeper and a handy man.

Louise told us about her time as a guest at the Lighthouse and how she and her husband, Jason, now a worker at the refuge, had become homeless and been helped to a new life by the experience.

Chris Wood gave a vote of thanks expressing admiration for both workers and their guests.

Minutes of the Annual Meeting held on Thursday 26 March 2009 were read and agreed to be a true record. They were signed by the president. There were no matters arising.
